Floyd Mayweather Jr. improved his record to 47-0-0 with 26 KOs with a unanimous decision win over Argentinian Marcos Maidana. Mayweather said afterwards to Jim Gray that his left hand was numb after the eighth round because of a bite from Maidana.
The Pit Bull made a stunning return at UFC Fight Night 51.
Utilizing the footwork and striking that made him one of the most feared heavyweights and a former UFC heavyweight champion. Andrei Arlovski toppled Bigfoot Silva in less than three minutes with a classic combination.
The hometown hero Silva could not recover as he crashed to the canvas with Arlovski regining hammerfists that forced the referee to call the contest amid a hushed Brazilian crowd.
Welcome back to The Crossfire.
#10 JESSICA “BATE ESTACA” ANDRADE VS LARISSA PACHECO
ANDREWS PREDICTION: LARISSA PACHEO VIA TKO.
WINNER: JESSICA ANDRADE VIA SUBMISSION
Andrews: Andrade took Pacheo to the ground and worked her over for the submission choke. Pacheo could not answer her strength and grappling. A smart win for Andrade.
Wiseman: Andrade didn’t waste any time getting her hands on Pacheco. Smart! The last thing she needed was Pacheco, who was making her UFC debut, getting into any kind of a standing routine. Andrade, a fantastic grappler limited Pacheco’s standing game simply by forcing her to defend off her back. Ground-and-pound, dominance, transiting into a choke. Fantastic!
LURI “MURAJO” ALCANTARA VS RUSSELL DOANE
ANDREWS PREDICTION: LURI ALCANTARA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION
WINNER: LURI ALCANTARA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION.
Andrews: Alcantara’s striking overpowered Doane’s grappling. A good win for Alcantara, but he needs to continue to work on his ground game.
Wiseman: Alcantara showed his superior striking and ground game, but he also showed his kryptonite: Wrestling. Doane took Alcantara down very easily and remained on top. Now of course, the problem that Doane showed was that he isn’t good on top against a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. He also showed that his striking defence needs work. Alcantara displayed his well-rounded skills tonight for an entertaining fight put on by both guys. Great win for Alcantara.
SANTIAGO “GENTE BOA” PONZINIBBIO VS WENDELL OLIVERIA
ANDREWS PREDICTION: WENDELL OLIVEIRA VIA TKO.
WINNER: SANTIAGO PONZINBBIO VIA TKO.
Andrews: This was a shocker to me. Santiago connected before Oliveria could get started. A good win for Ponzinbbio.
Wiseman: That was fast. There was a very short feeling out process, but when Ponzinibbio started connecting he just let the strikes fly. Oliveira was knocked out in a hurry. Incredible power and speed shown by Ponzinibbio.
LEONARDO SANTOS VS EFRAIN “HECO EN MEXICO” ESCUDERO
ANDREWS PREDICTION: LEONARDO SANTOS VIA TKO.
WINNER: LEONARDO SANTOS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION
Andrews: Credit Escudero for outperforming Santos on the feet. Credit Santos for using the takedown and controlling the bout on the ground. Leonardo needs work on the cardio and reevaluate how Efrain was able to outstrike him.
Wiseman: The story of success was credit to Santos’ ground game. Escudero showed that when standing, he was the superior fighter. He showed great combinations and good cardio. However, the first and the final rounds were all Santos thanks to his ground game, showing Escundero’s weakness, getting back to his feet.
GLEISON TIBAU VS PIOTR HALLMANN
ANDREWS PREDICTION: PIOTR HALLMAN VIA SUBMISSION
WINNER: GLEISON TIBAU VIA SPLIT-DECISION
Andrews: I thought Hallman won the fight as he controlled Tibau a lot in the clinch and against the cage. He controlled the centre of the octagon. He got up almost immediately from his takedowns. Tibau landed the spinning backfist and a few strikes but compared to Hallman’s knees in the clinch? At any rate, this is not an impressive win for Gleison. He gassed right after the first round. Hallman was the more impressive fighter here.
Wiseman: Hallmann certainly has a chin. Tibau rocked him several times throughout the fight, showing that his precision is superior. Mixing things up with the striking and clinch game certainly made things difficult for Hallmann. With that said, Hallmann showed that he doesn’t know the meaning to the word ‘quit,’ especially in the final round, but Tibau dominated and out-powered him for the decision win.
#4 ANTONIO “BIGFOOT” SILVA VS #14 ANDREI “THE PIT BULL” ARLOVSKI
ANDREWS PREDICTION: ANTONIO SILVA VIA TKO
WINNER: ANDREI ARLOVSKI VIA TKO.
Andrews: Andrei used his speed and his footwork to set up the combination that dropped Bigfoot, all in the first round! One of the upsets of the year, no question. Yes, The Pit Bull is back.
Wiseman: Wow! Who saw this happening? We all knew that Arlovski had the speed advantage, but with the Bigfoot we’ve seen lately, it just seemed like it wouldn’t be enough to win. However, Arlovski showed that he still has power which can threaten anyone. Quick and dominant fight for Arlovski.
Newly minted Bellator heavyweight Stephan Bonnar chatted with Inside MMA’s Kenny Rice and Bas Rutten and not surprisingly, Tito Ortiz’s name came up.
Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski was once a prodigy in the heavyweight division.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0-0, 26 KOs) won his initial encounter with Marcos Maidiana (35-4-1, 31 KOs), but the Argentinian experienced his moment in the sun.
#3 ranked UFC heavyweight Travis “Hapa” Browne (16-2-1) will battle Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub (11-4-0) at UFC 181 on December 6th.
ONE FC will return to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to host their next event Roar of Tigers October 17th.
